Mariners Outpace Storm in Conference Opener

Mariners Outpace Storm in Conference Opener

The Mariners opened their Bay Valley Conference slate by hosting the defending conference champs, Napa Valley College. With the Mariners finishing second in conference last season, an intense contest was in store and the teams definitely lived up to it. In a match that was back and forth from the opening minute, the Mariners would prevail by a final score of 3-1.

A great early combination play released Brennan Blondin into the Storm penalty area, where he was taken down by a defender from behind. Manuel Garcia calmly put the penalty kick into the back of the net to give the Mariners a 1-0 lead. As the teams exchanged scoring opportunities, goalkeeper Chris DeLeon made several massive saves to preserve the lead. Towards the end of the first half, Sophomore Emilo Flores Posada used a huge hustle play to put away a second Mariners goal, off a double assist from Alex Izaguirre and Brian Diaz. At the half, 2-0 lead to the Mariners.

Starting the second half, the furious pace continued, with both teams going full speed. A penalty awarded to the Storm saw them cut the Mariners lead in half, despite DeLeon nearly saving the effort. The Mariners defense tightened up, flying around to ensure that Napa Valley did not have an opportunity to tie the match. A stunning individual effort from Brian Diaz and a clutch finish from Pablo Nunez Smith again gave the Mariners a two-goal advantage with fifteen minutes remaining. The Mariners closed out the game with that lead intact.

In the Bay Valley Conference, every game is an important one. The Mariners finished the day 1-0 in the conference and look forward to their next match on Friday, October 1st, when they travel to Oakland to face Merritt College.
