Men's Soccer Falls Short Despite Second Half Surge

Corner Kick vs Canada

The Mariners hosted their second consecutive home game against a traditional state playoff opponent, Cañada College. The Colts brought an experienced roster and took advantage of a few key moments to take the lead into halftime. At the halftime interval the young Mariners regrouped, putting forth a strong effort and controlling many stretches of play in the second half of the contest. With a final score of 4-1, the Mariners will look to build off that strong second half performance.

A strong start to the game for the Mariners saw a back and forth first twenty minutes of action. The Colts capitalized on a corner kick to take a 1-0 lead about midway through the first half. For the duration of the first half, it was the Colts controlling the action, finding the net twice more to lead 3-0 at the halftime whistle.

Showing a lot of mental toughness and resilience, the Mariners responded with a great second half of team soccer. Playing team defense and cohesive attacking soccer, the Mariners created several goal scoring opportunities in the second half. Brennan Blondin notched a goal for the second consecutive game, a smooth finish off his head coming from a Manuel Garcia corner kick. However, the lone goal was not enough to catch the Colts, as Cañada would leave Kentfield with the road win.

The intensity, focus, and team play that the Mariners displayed in the second half are positive signs of things to come this season. They will look to build momentum in their next match on Friday, 9/3, against Chabot College.
