Mariners Show a Strong Start in Men's Soccer Season Opener

College of Marin Men’s soccer opened the 2021 season with a back and forth battle against the visiting Mustangs from San Joaquin Delta College. It was an even match, which saw multiple lead changes and ultimately ended in a draw. With the score tied up 1-1 at halftime, the second half shaped up to be tightly contested and did not fail to deliver.

Delta struck first in the first half with an early goal, but an assist from goalkeeper Aly Alvardo to Brennan Blondin saw the Mariners level the score just minutes later. The teams traded opportunities and control of the game as the first half came to a close.

In the second half, the Mariners would take the lead after a Blondin assist and a stellar half-volley finish from Sophomore captain Brian Diaz. In a reverse of first half events, the Mustangs tied the game just minutes later, setting up an exciting finish.

Blondin added his second goal of the day to give the Mariners a 3-2 lead with under ten minutes to play. The Mustangs battled back and were rewarded with a penalty kick with just minutes remaining. Goalkeeper Aly Alvarado nearly had the save, but it was a well-struck penalty that found the side net.

The final score of 3-3 seemed a fair one, as both teams had their moments controlling the game. A solid start to the 2021 campaign that features many new faces for the Mariners. Freshman Blondin topped the scoring sheet on the day with seven points to his name.

The Mariners are next in action on Tuesday, August 31st when they host Canada College at 2:00pm.
