Mariners’ Women’s Basketball Drops Home Opener To Modesto Pirates 61-35

College of Marin Women's Basketball did not begin their home slate on a positive note. The Mariners fell behind early in the first quarter and could comeback from a double-digit deficit. The length of Modesto was difficult for the Mariners to combat, and increased their difficulty scoring. The result was a 61-35 loss to the Modesto College Pirates. Victoria Bing led the Mariners with 14 points while Maya Murry-Pena chipped in 12 of her own.

The Modesto Pirates raced out to a 14-4 lead in the first half and never trailed in the game. Bing provided all the Mariners' offense in the first quarter as she scored all six of Marin's points. The Mariners trailed 20-6 after 10 minutes of play.

Marin's offense awoke in the second quarter as they battled almost evenly with the Pirates. Modesto outscored the Mariners by just two points, and led 33-17 at the break. Bing led Marin with 11 points in the half.

The second half saw the two teams play to nearly a draw. Modesto out paced the Mariners 12-8 in the third and led 45-25. The fourth quarter had both teams empty the benches and the clock expired with a 61-35 final score.

The Mariners struggled from the floor as they shot 21.8% overall and just 2-19 from the three-point line. Modesto was a tad better as they shot 40.3% overall.

Freshman forward Victoria Bing had a double double with 14 points and 13 rebounds and added a pair of steals. Murry-Pena had 12 points, three assists and two steals while Aida Sheikhanishahin had five boards, two assists and two steals.

The loss dropped the Mariners' record to 1-3 on the season. They host the De Anza College Dons on Wednesday November 20th at 7:30pm
