Mariners Women’s Basketball Edged By De Anza At Home 57-52

College of Marin Women's Basketball battled until the final moments with the De Anza Dons on Wednesday, but it was not enough as the visitors thwarted the Mariners last gasp comeback in a 57-52 loss. Marin led the game at halftime but a strong third quarter by the Dons put the Mariners in a whole to start the fourth. Kaleah Williams led Marin with 17 points while Maya Murry-Pena added 16.

The Mariners came out strong in the first quarter as they led 13-10 before Vanessa Torres railed a three pointer at the buzzer to give Marin a six-point advantage early on. The second quarter saw the De Anza Dons draw closer as they outscored the Mariners 11-9 to cut the home team's lead to four points at halftime.

The Dons blitzed Marin after the break more than doubling their first half point total in the third quarter alone. The visitors employed a savage press that baffled the Mariners and forced double digit turnovers in the period. De Anza benefited with a number of open layups and led 46-39 heading to the fourth.

Marin battled through the fourth as Kaleah Williams attacked without mercy. She was able to drag the Mariners close, but a late run by De Anza had the Mariners down 57-48 with 1:06 left. Marin made a pair of layups in the final seconds but could not complete the comeback.

Williams had 17 points on 6-14 shooting and added eight rebounds and two assists. Murry-Pena had 16 points, seven rebounds and six steals on the day while Victoria Bing just missed a double double with 11 points and nine rebounds.
