Marin Women’s Basketball Falls Shasta Knights 65-50

Mariners Women's Basketball were out done by the duo from Shasta. The Knights' Riley Wallen and Jenna Wallace combined for 49 of Shasta's 65 points and nearly outscored the Mariners by themselves on Friday in Kentfield. The Mariners kept the game within reach after the first half, but hit an offensive rut in the third quarter that ballooned their deficit to double digits before falling 65-50. Maya Murry-Pena led Marin with 18 points while Vanessa Torres chipped in 14 of her own.

The game was nearly even through the first nine minutes of play as Shasta held a slim 14-11 advantage. Marin had a chance to finish the quarter tied up, but Shasta scored eight points over the final minute and led 22-13 after 10 minutes. Marin battled back in the second quarter and by halftime cut Shasta's advantage to only eight points at 35-27. The Mariners' defense shined down the stretch as they held the Knights scoreless over the final two minutes of the half.

The third quarter was the difference maker in the game as Marin went ice cold to open the second half. The Mariners trailed 44-33 with 2:30 left in the quarter before Shasta scored seven straight points to end the third with a 51-33 advantage. The Mariners' battled in the final period but could not complete a comeback and fell 65-50.

Wallen scored 28 on the game and Wallace 21 for Shasta. They added nine and 13 rebounds respectively and combined to make seven of 16 shots from beyond the arc.

Murry-Pena led Marin with 18 points on 8-16 shooting. She added two blocks and seven rebounds for the Mariners. Torres had 14 points including three made threes and tallied seven rebounds and two steals. Kaleah Williams was the other Mariner in double figures with 11 points to go with five steals, four assists and six rebounds.

The loss dropped the Mariners' record to 1-5 on the young season. They travel to De Anza for a tournament beginning on Thursday, November 5th. Their first game of the tournament is against Gavilan College at 5pm.
