College of Marin Women’s Basketball Pushes Past Gavilan Rams 54-46

Mariners Women's Basketball opened the De Anza College Tournament on Thursday with a win over the Gavilan College Rams 54-46. The Mariners used a big third quarter performance to propel themselves to victory. Victoria Bing and Kaleah Williams shared joint scoring honors with 19 points each.

Marin and Gavilan played to a draw in the first ten minutes of the game as each tallied 13 points led by six off the hands of Bing. The second quarter saw Gavilan jump out to small lead and coast to halftime with a 28-22 advantage. Vanessa Torres provided the offensive spark in the second for the Mariners with a pair of buckets including Marin's lone three pointer of the evening.

Despite the six-point deficit the Mariners did not despair and walloped the Rams out of the break. Williams led the charge for Marin with eight points in the third, Bing added seven of her own as Marin ended the period with a 43-36 lead.

The teams played nearly even in the fourth quarter as Marin hung on to their lead. Williams was crucial in the final minutes with a trio of free throws made to ice the game and secure the win.

Bing had one of her best games of the year with 19 points, eight rebounds and a steal. Williams recorded her fifth straight game in double digits with 19 points of her own. She added 11 rebounds, and five steals in the game.

The win pushed the Mariners' record to 2-5 on the year. Next up in the De Anza Tournament is a showdown with the Las Positas Hawks on Friday, December 6th at 5pm.
