Women’s Basketball Falls to 12th Ranked Butte College 84-54

College of Marin Women's Basketball endured a 30-point loss at the hands of the Butte College Roadrunners 84-54. The Mariners ventured north on Sunday to take on Head Coach Emily Schaefer's alma mater. The 12th ranked Roadrunners blitzed the Mariners with 49 first half points and built an advantage too large for Marin to surmount. Kaleah Williams had a huge game for Marin with 27 points and 10 boards.

Butte and Marin played even for the first few minutes but a rash of turnovers by the visiting Mariners put Butte in the lead 22-13 by the end of the first quarter. The deficit ballooned in the second as Marin went cold from the floor, while their hosts heated up. The result was a 49-21 first half that saw Marin looking for answers.

They certainty found them coming out of halftime as Marin played nearly even to Butte in the second half. Butte outscored Marin 23-21 in the third quarter and both teams tallied an even dozen in the fourth. Though the final score line read 84-54, the Mariners did not fold after a difficult first half.

The Mariners shot 41.7% overall but made just two of 12 attempted three pointers. Butte mustered a 47% shooting game and made 14 three pointers at a 40% clip.

Williams led all scorers with 27 points on 11-19 shooting from the floor and 5-8 from the line. She added 10 rebounds, two assists and block for her fifth double double of the season. Maya Murry-Pena scored 11 points with four rebounds, four assists and three steals while Victoria Bing had nine points, six boards, three assists and three steals.

The Mariners finished their non-conference schedule with a 3-8 record. They open Bay Valley Conference play at Mendocino College on Friday, December 20th.
