Women’s Basketball Falls To Contra Costa 57-48

The Mariners opened their 2020 calendar with a road trip across the Richmond Bridge to visit the Contra Costa Comets. While the teams played well down the stretch, the Comets suffocated Marin's offense in the first half, making the remainder of the game an uphill battle. The result was a nine-point defeat 57-48 at the hands of the Comets. Maya Murry-Pena led the way for Marin with 20 points while Victoria Bing chipped in 15 of her own.

The Comets shot out to an early lead and doubled up the Mariners in the first quarter of the game 16-8. Marin tried to rally but ended up increasing their deficit in the second quarter. They were outscored by Contra Costa 18-8 and trailed at the break 34-16.

The tide turned in the second half as Marin was the better team in the third quarter. They limited the Comets to just 10 points while scoring 14 of their own. They ramped up the intensity in the fourth and put pressure on Contra Costa with an 18-point barrage. Unfortunately, it was not enough for the Mariners who could not overcome the early margin. Though they limited Contra Costa to 13 fourth quarter points, the Mariners ultimately fell 57-48.

Contra Costa shot 38.2% from the floor while the Mariners converted on only 27.6% of their attempts. The Comets also made eight three pointers while Marin managed only three. The Mariners did hold the advantage in free throws as they outscored the Comets 13 to 7 from the line.

Christina Hunley dominated for Contra Costa with 33 points including seven made three pointers. Jaszmyn Pond added 18 points and 15 boards for the Comets.

Maya Murry-Pena scored 20 for the Mariners and added five rebounds and two steals. Victoria Bing was the second leading scorer with 15 points and added a team high 15 rebounds in the game.

The Mariners face a lengthy road trip ahead. They visit the Yuba College 49ers in Marysville on Saturday, January 4th.
