Mariners Women's Basketball undertook a less than enjoyable road trip to Marysville on Saturday to take on the 49ers of Yuba College. Marin's hosts from up north showed little regard for the Mariners from the opening tip and ultimately bludgeoned their visitors 78-33. The Mariners were limited on offense and allowed a quarter century in the opening period making the game an uphill battle from the start. Kaleah Williams led the Mariners with 13 points but it was not enough for Marin.
The game began at a breakneck speed as Yuba shot out of a cannon from the opening tip. They seemingly tallied two shots for each that Marin took and as a result they scored 25 points within the first 10 minutes of competition. The Mariners were limited to single digits and recorded only a septet of points resulting in an early 25-7 deficit.
The team showed improvement in the second quarter as the visiting Mariners managed to score 13 points and yielded only 17 to Yuba. While the overall deficit did grow, Marin looked more comfortable in the offense and trailed at the half 42-20 to the 49ers.
The third quarter unfortunately undid most of the progress the Mariners made in the second quarter as the visitors were limited to just three total points in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Yuba responded with 21 of their own, and but the game out of reach for good with a 63-23 score at the end of the period. While the Mariners played better in the final stanza it was too little too late to prevent a blowout at the hands of Yuba 78-33.
Williams led Marin with 13 points and eight rebounds. She added an assist and a block to boot. Maya Murry-Pena was the only other Mariner in double digits with 11 points. She added five rebounds and a pair of assists as well.
As a team the Mariners were limited to just 23.4% shooting and made only nine of 25 tries from the free throw line. Yuba posted a robust 40.3% shooting percentage and knocked down 13 triples in the game.
The loss dropped the Mariners' record to 1-2 in the Bay Valley Conference and 4-10 overall on the season. Next up for Marin is a home date with the Los Medanos College Mustangs on Wednesday, January 8th.
