College of Marin Women’s Basketball Wrangles First Win Of 2020

Mariners Women's Basketball recorded their first victory of 2020 on Wednesday evening in Kentfield. The Mariners hosted the Los Medanos College Mustangs and used a second half run to comfortably secure the win. Vanessa Torres enjoyed a career evening with 19 points in route to a victory over their Bay Valley Conference opponents.

The first half was a taught back and forth affair as neither team could find a rhythm. Marin led 13-9 after the first quarter, but could not build on that momentum over the second 10 minutes of play. The Mustangs responded in the second quarter and outscored the Mariners by five points to take a slim 31-30 lead at halftime.

The first half was wrought with missed layups and second chances by both sides. The team to take advantage in the second half would be the ultimate winner. Fortunately it was the Mariners who seized on that chance as they turned second and third chances into points and made the second half a laugher by the end. The Mariners doubled up the Mustangs 30-15 over the final two periods and grabbed a much needed 60-46 win at home.

The Mariners got contributions up and down the roster led by Torres' 19 points on 7 of 16 shooting. She buried four three pointers and added eight rebounds. Maya Murry-Pena scored 16 points and added seven rebounds and eight assists while Kaleah Williams scored 14 points and added 20 boards.

The Mariners improved to 2-2 in the Bay Valley Conference and 5-10 on the season with the victory over the Mustangs.

The Mariners road ahead gets more difficult as they travel to Solano College on Friday, January 10th to take on the Falcons at 7:30pm.
