Women’s Basketball Grounded by Solano Falcons 59-48

Mariners Women's Basketball dropped a close game to the Solano College Falcons on Friday in Fairfield. The Mariners squared off with the Solano in a game that see sawed back and forth throughout the first half. The second half saw the hosting Falcons pull away at times, but the Mariners never lost contact despite falling back by double digits. Though Marin lost 59-48, they showed their competitive fire. Vanessa Torres led the Mariners with 16 points, one of three from Marin in double digits.

The first quarter saw the two competitors exchange the lead four times before a late layup by Solano put them on top 14-12 after 10 minutes. Vanessa Torres hit a three pointer for Marin to give her team a 17-14 lead with 7:56 remaining in the half. Solano battled back to take a 21-17 lead before Torres cut the Falcons advantage to one point. A pair of late triples by Solano put the home team in control 27-20 at halftime.

Marin did not go quietly in the second half. They fell down by double digits early on but responded to cut Solano's lead to 35-30 with 3:10 left in the third. The home team responded with an 8-3 run to close out the quarter and carry a 10-point lead 43-33 into the fourth. Marin kept the lead within reach at 49-39 and 51-41, but the could not get any closer than 10 points for the remainder of the half. The Mariners never gave up down the stretch but could not avoid a 59-48 defeat.

Torres had 16 points on 5 of 12 shooting with three three-pointers and five rebounds. Kaleah Williams had 11 points and a team high 14 boards while Maya Murry-Pena scored 10 points and added three boards.

Vanessa Hughes led Solano with 13 points in the game.

The loss dropped the Mariners' record to 5-11 on the year and 2-3 in the Bay Valley Conference. They have a chance to even their BVC record on Wednesday as they play host to the Merritt College Thunderbirds at 7:30pm.
