Women’s Basketball Uses Big Second Half To Defeat Mendocino 55-42

Mariners Women's Basketball secured a season sweep over the Mendocino College Eagles with a 55-42 home victory on Friday. A close first half turned into a double-digit victory for Marin thanks to a big scoring game by Kaleah Williams. The sophomore scored 25 points for the Mariners who grabbed their sixth victory of the year.

The Mariners scored the first six points of the game and led 11-4 midway through the first quarter. Mendocino scored a few late buckets, but Marin still led 15-10 at the start of the second. Offense became scarce to start the second quarter and Mendocino even rallied to take a 17-16 lead with three minutes left in the half. Williams buried a three to give Marin a two-point lead and followed with put back layup to give Marin a 21-17 lead at halftime.

Williams scored 15 of Marin's 21 first half points.

The Mariners began the third quarter on an 11-0 run and led by 15 before Mendocino scored their first bucket of the second half. The visitors rallied within seven at 32-25 forcing a Mariners' timeout. Following the timeout, Marin stepped up their defense and led 38-29 after the third quarter.

Mendocino did not go quietly as they cut Marin's lead to 40-34 before Williams took over to close out the game. The sophomore led Marin on a 14-2 run to take a 54-36 advantage with just a minute left. Mendocino scored a few late buckets but it was not enough as Marin held serve for a 55-42 final score.

Williams had 25 points on 10 of 21 shots. She added nine rebounds, three assists, three steals and a block as well. Sophia Jacob had an excellent game with 14 points and a pair of made threes. Victoria Bing added seven points and 12 rebounds while Vanessa Torres had seven points and seven assists.

The win improved the Mariners' record to 6-13 overall and 3-5 in the Bay Valley Conference. They have a week of rest and recovery prior to a home date with the Yuba College 49ers on Wednesday, February 5th.
