Mariners Battle Shasta In Pre Season Game

John Berry 11/18/2021

The College of Marin women’s basketball team was defeated by Shasta College on Thursday at home by a 68-34 score in a non-league game.  Falling behind early on by a 14-2 margin, the Mariners made a spirited second period comeback to cut the halftime lead to 29-22.  The comeback was generated by solid team passing offense against Shasta’s 2-3 zone defense.

However it was a tale of two halves as the College of Marin women were held to just 12 second half points in a 68-34 losing effort.  COM falls to 1-4 in early season play.

Guard Jaden Davis led the Mariners in scoring with 12 points on 6 for 13 shooting.  She also collected a team leading seven rebounds.  Fellow guard Victoria Claros chipped in with nine points.  Tania Hernandez came off the bench to add five points and four rebounds.

COM’s team offense was disappointing as they were just 13 of 50 from the field to shoot a team percentage of 26%.  Marin was 4 of 20 from the three point stripe.  Claros had a pair of treys.  The most correctable number from COM’s stat sheet was 30 turnovers.

College of Marin head coach Emily Schaefer felt her team’s issues on offense could definitely be improved upon.  Schaefer noted that the Mariners are loaded with freshman who are just starting to learn to play together as a unit.  She contends that over the course of the remaining non-league schedule her team will be put to the test by some talented junior college programs that will only make COM that much mentally tougher when the Bay Valley Conference begins league play in late December.

The Mariners take to the court this coming Saturday, November 20th, to take on Ohlone College in Fremont.  Tip off is 3:00pm.  The next home game for the COM women is next Tuesday versus Mission College of Santa Clara.  Game time is 7:00pm.
