Remembering Coach John Berry

Coach John Berry, a beloved figure in both golf and basketball, left an indelible mark on the College of Marin and the Lake County community. His passion for sports and commitment to shaping young lives has created a legacy that will endure for years to come. A graduate of Marquette University with a B.A. in Political Science and Accounting, and an M.A. in Educational Administration from the University of San Francisco, John dedicated his life to education and athletics.

Known for his tireless work to promote golf in the county, John played a pivotal role in reviving the Lake County Amateur Golf Circuit in the 1990s. His contributions extended far beyond the golf course, as he spent decades serving as the principal and boys’ basketball coach at Mountain Vista Middle School in Kelseyville, and as the golf coach at Kelseyville High School for over 40 years. His influence on students and athletes was profound, touching countless lives with his mentorship and wisdom.

In addition to his impact on golf, John was an invaluable member of the College of Marin women’s basketball coaching staff. Serving as an assistant coach, he became a steady and reassuring presence, offering his experience, knowledge, and humor to the team. Known for his meticulous stats and his keen insights during games, John was much more than a coach—he was a mentor and friend. His loud countdown of the shot clock will be one of the many things we will miss, along with his dedication to the team's success.

Coach Berry joined the women’s basketball program under head coach Emily Schaefer, contributing significantly to the team’s first playoff appearance in nearly 20 years. His contributions to College of Marin Athletics will forever be remembered, and his presence will be deeply missed by everyone fortunate enough to have known him.

Our deepest condolences go out to the Berry family—his wife Julie, daughters Emily and Liz, and son Nick. Coach John Berry’s legacy will continue to live on through the many lives he touched, and his memory will forever hold a special place in the hearts of the College of Marin community.

Rest in peace, Coach. You will be missed but never forgotten.
