College of Marin Women’s Soccer Drops Home Match To Skyline 5-1

Mariners' Women's soccer fell on Tuesday to the Skyline Trojans. The match served as a return leg for the September 6th match at Skyline which the Trojans won 8-3. Tuesday's affair was certainly a tale of two halves. The Mariners fell behind 5-0 in the first half, but were the dominant team in the second half. They were unable to bridge the gap, as Sophia Isabel-Maso scored the Mariners' lone goal in the match.

The visitors broke the deadlock just seconds into the match. After a deflected chance, Celeste Henry gathered and finished from close range for a 1-0 Skyline lead. The Mariners' back four tightened, but Braedyn Stone doubled the Trojan's advantage in the 17th minute. Henry completed her brace in the 24th minute, and bagged her hat trick in the 33rd minute for a 4-0 lead before Sierra Olsen scored in the 41st to put Skyline in command at 5-0.

Marin did not go down without a fight. The second half saw them ramp up the intensity at both sides of the field. They blasted Skyline with eight shots in the second half and forced Trojan's goalie Genevieve McVanner-Rodgers into nine saves in the match. Maso had a number of chanced but it wasn't until the 69th minute when she was able to cash in.

The sophomore took a pass from Yuliana Velazquez Signor and got in on goal before curling her shot past a diving McVanner-Rodgers and into the net for the goal. It was Maso's fifth goal of the season, and the team's sixth goal overall. She had a few more chances in the match before being forced off late with a lower body injury.

The final whistle sounded as Marin went down 5-1. The Mariners seek their first win of the year. They begin conference play at home against the Napa Valley Storm on Friday, September 27th at 4pm.
