Mariners Lay Siege to the Storm in Conference Opener

The Mariners played host to the Napa Valley College Storm in the Bay Valley Conference opener for both teams. This contest was controlled by the Mariners from the start, an attack-minded effort from the entire team. In the end, the Mariners finished the game on top by a final score of 6-2.

Although dominant in the first half possession and attacking numbers, the Mariners would lead only 1-0 at the break. A goal from Cyrene Paez was the only score of a half in which the Mariners had 14 opportunities on goal. Napa Valley goalkeeper made some fantastic saves to keep the Storm in the game in the first half.

In the second half, the Mariners were far more accurate with their scoring opportunities. Five second half goals would come from nine shot attempts. Kelley Grant would add two goals and an assist, including an epic strike from 30 yards out. Yuliana Velazquez finished the day leading the points category, adding two assists to her trio of goals.

The Mariners take their 1-0 conference record into next week as they host Merritt College on Tuesday, 9/28.
