College of Marin Volleyball Mauled by Sierra College Wolverines 3-0

The Mariners faced their toughest test of the young season Wednesday with a match against perennial state contender Sierra College. The Wolverines hosted the Mariners, but showed little hospitality as they swept through Marin by scores of 25-21, 25-15 and 25-11.

Marin started off well enough with a competitive first set, they fell behind early, but kept within striking distance. The were unable to pull off the first set upset and dropped the opener by just four points 25-21.

The second set saw the gap between the two squads swell, as Marin fell behind early on and could not battle back. They were downed by 10 points, 25-15. The final set saw the Mariners run out of gas, as the Mariners' eight-woman contingent had trouble keeping up with the depth of Sierra.

The loss was the Mariners' second of the year and dropped their overall record to 1-2. Marin's squad was buoyed by the return of sophomore Maggie Johnson into the libero role, but that was partially offset by injuries to Beatrice Heimbroadt and Jade Williams who were unable to compete.

The team hit negative on the day with just nine kills against 17 errors and they managed just a single ace against seven errors. Freshmen Remy Pelzman and Lara Perry shared top scoring honors with for points each while Sasha Urban led the team with nine digs.

Marin has a day of rest and recovery before they travel to Diablo Valley College for a doubleheader against the host Vikings and the Ohlone College Renegades on Friday, September 6th.
