Mariners Volleyball Overcomes Napa In Five Set Thriller

College of Marin Volleyball displayed their Jekyll and Hyde tenancies in their midweek matchup with the Napa Valley Storm. The Mariners were dominant in the first set, before regressing and falling in the second and third sets. Despite trailing 2-1 the Mariners battled back with convincing victories in the fourth and fifth sets to snag their first Bay Valley Conference win of the season.

The Mariners played a nearly perfect first set in route to a convincing 25-11 victory over the Storm. College of Marin hit .200 in the set with 12 kills against just five errors with 35 total attacks.

It appeared the Mariners would run away with the match, but they were stymied in the second. Napa battled on every point and Marin could not get any separation despite 15 kills against just five errors. The match was tied at 25-25 but Napa scored back to back points to take the set 27-25.

The third set saw the Mariners' focus go off the rails a bit as they hit .000 with 11 kills and 11 hitting errors. Napa took advantage and grabbed the win 25-21.

College of Marin was down, but not out and they rallied with an impressive fourth set. Despite hitting just .045 the Mariners yielded just five other points to Napa and evened the match up with a 25-11 victory. They carried their momentum into the fifth and final set and rolled to a 15-8 win to take the match.

The uneven game was a learning experience for the freshmen laden team. A trio of first year players made significant contributions as Beatrice Heimbrodt, Remy Pelzman and Lara Perry all scored in double digits for the Mariners.

Heimbrodt led the way with 18 kills, an assist and a block for 19.5 points while adding 14 digs in the process. Pelzman had 14 kills, and two aces for 16 points. Pelzman also led the team with 23 digs. Perry had a very impressive day as a middle. She had 11 kills with a .391 kill percentage, and added three aces and three block assists for 15.5 total points.

The win pushed the Mariners' record to 1-2 in the BVC. They sit in fifth place with a match at Contra Costa on top. The Mariners visit the Comets on Friday, October 4th at 6pm.
