Mariners Finish First Season Second in Coast North

In the first season for the Mariners Women’s Water Polo team, the Mariners finish in second place in the Coast Conference North. “I’m so proud of this group,” said head Coach Steve Carrera about the 2021 squad, “they all committed to the best of their ability and bought in and saw it through.”

The team finished the conference play 4-2 overall and narrowly missed out to a playoff berth to Ohlone College, who moved ahead of the Mariners for playoff seeding due to the head-to-head win.

This wasn’t Coach Carrera’s first rodeo with a start-up program. Prior to his time at College of Marin he started up the highly successful water polo programs at Orange Lutheran High School (2016 California State Champs), Concordia University (3x NAIA Champs), and turned a start-up program at Northwood High School into a powerhouse.

The 2021 season was a team effort, but statistically, was led by Tessa Pares, Maya Hunter, Kira Samson, and Madalyn Vincent each tallying double digits in goals and assists.

The future looks bright for the Mariners who hope to reload for the 2022 season as several leaders from the 2021 campaign transfer to other institutions to pursue their academic careers.
