In only the second season of competition in modern history of the program, the College of Marin Women's Water Polo team wraps up the season in historic fashion with a spot in the California State Championship tournament. The Mariners (16-8) are seeded #6 in the 8-team regional playoff and look to upset #3 Merced on Friday, November 11 at host Delta College in Stockton.

Statistically speaking, the Mariners are led by Alana McCartney who netted 66 goals, tallied 46 assists, and boasted a jaw-dropping 71 steals. McCartney leads the state in each category when controlled for games played. Other statistical leaders for the Mariners include Lillian Weires, who had 24 goals, 12 assists, and 21 steals. Rebecca Janssen had 15 goals and 22 assists, and in goal for the Mariners, Alexandra Gallardo had 55 saves.

Beyond the stats, the team has come a long way in a short period of time. Head Coach Steve Carrera was brimming with pride when asked about the season and the playoff berth: "I can't express how proud I am of this team.  I told (the members of the team) that when you decided to take a chance on College of Marin you had the possibility of making history.  They accomplished it and this team will always be the first team to qualify for Norcals."

Marin faces Merced College at 11:40 am. The bracket for the NorCal Regional Championships can be found linked here.
